North and South Korea exchange fire

South Korean military officials said North and South Korea have
exchanged fire across their land border on Friday. The incident happened
when balloons from the South bearing
leaflets critical of the government in the North drew fire from
northern forces. The two sides exchange periodic fire across their
disputed western maritime border but incidents on land are rare.

The reported firing comes as North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has been out of public view for more
than a month. His disappearance from the public eye in early September
has fuelled rumor mills about his health and his grasp on power
